| 内容記述 | 本稿は、ハンナ・アーレントの政治理論における全体主義とデモクラシーとの関係を再考し、その現代的意義を示すものである。そのため本稿では第一に『全体主義の起原』（1951）における「大衆運動」の記述を検証し、「大衆」と全体主義テロルとの関係は単純な加担や同調として描かれていないことを確認する。その際これまで看過されてきた陰謀論や秘密結社に関する記述に注目することで、アーレントの問題提起を再構成する。第二に、アーレントの全体主義論をカール・J・フリードリヒの議論と比較し、両者の共通点と相違点を明らかにする。その際1953年にアメリカで開催された全体主義会議でのフリードリヒの報告と、それに対するアーレントの批評に注目する。両者は共にデモクラシーと全体主義とが密接な関係にある点で見解を共有していたが、フリードリヒがテクノロジーとメディアの発展を全体主義の要因としたのに対して、アーレントが陰謀論や秘密結社化する運動を全体主義の指標とした点に、両者の相違があったことを示す。本稿は以上のように、アーレントの全体主義論を新たな視点から捉え直すことで、現代政治の文脈における「全体主義」の再定義を行うものである。 | |||||||

| 内容記述 | In this paper, I will clarify Hannah Arendt's views on the relationship between democracy and totalitarianism and discuss its relevance today. First, I will critically examine the portrayal of the political involvement of the "masses" in The Origins of Totalitarianism and argue that their role in the totalitarian movement is ambiguous. Experts have suggested that the mobilization of politically isolated "masses" was important in the development of totalitarian movements, but there has been no consistent description of the relationship between these "masses" and totalitarian terror, which ultimately leads to concentration camps and extermination camps. Second, I will compare Arendt's theory of totalitarianism with the arguments of Carl J. Friedrich and discuss the originality and issues of Arendt's theory. I will focus on Friedrich's report at the Totalitarianism Conference in 1953 and Arendt's comments on it, highlighting both common understandings and differences in their opinions. This paper aims to rethink Arendt's theory of totalitarianism to demonstrate the validity and appropriateness of the term "totalitarianism" in modern politics. | |||||||
